About the Speaker

James Mahaffey began his educational career at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Biology and Highest Honors. He continued his education in Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences. He has had experience working in a number of positions, including as a freelance scientific editor in both CompuScript Ltd. and Edanz Group Ltd, as well as a chemistry adjunct associate professor at Hunter College. Mahaffey began his career in Emerald Foundation, Inc. in 2018 as a Scientific Program Manager where he evaluated and followed-up with young and senior investigator awards. He was promoted to Vice President in 2019, where he developed a new award mechanism at Emerald Foundation, Inc. that specifically targets late-stage postdoctoral fellows and has a transition award component to make them better faculty candidates.

Emerald Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to supporting basic and translational biomedical research that improves our understanding of currently incurable diseases and their complexities. The overall goal of the Foundation is to promote innovative strategies that will lead to preventions, treatments, or cures for such conditions. In service of this mission, the Foundation a grant mechanism for late-stage postdoctoral fellows that can transition to a new institute should they accept a tenure-track research position. The Foundation also provides financial support for ambitious scientific projects, including those in their early stages and those not currently supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, DoD, or other government agencies.

Emerald Foundation, Inc. Postdoctoral Transition Awards are multi-year grants, offering up to three years of support. The primary goals of these awards are to 1) fill the funding gap for talented late-stage postdocs who have completed their initial fellowship, and 2) help awardees achieve early success in tenure-track positions by providing funding that bridges this transitional stage of their careers. The Foundation supports individuals of promise through Postdoctoral Transition Awards and Young Investigator Awards, as well as those at the heights of their careers with Distinguished Investigator Awards. Al are multi-year grants that offer up to three years of support.
