Fund Black Scientists
Fund Black Scientists, published in Cell, January 26, 2021, is a call to end racial funding disparity.
In the scientific journal, Cell, the paper, Fund Black Scientists, was published today, Jan. 26, 2021, by 19 BME distinguished women faculty who are collectively calling on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discuss racial funding disparities and suggest solutions for the dismantling of the critical racial barriers.
The co-authors are calling on NIH leadership to publicly recognize and describe how NIH will invest in understanding the impact of racism in NIH grant review. The suggested solutions to dismantle the barriers include: institute policies to immediately achieve racial funding equity, make diversity score-driving criteria, prioritize diverse teams for funding, and diversify review panels, and train and empower NIH leadership, staff and grant reviewers and recipients to recognize and stop racism.
The action is also called on individual scientists, private sector and academia stating that "We, the individuals and institutions that comprise our profession, are each ultimately responsible for the racism that permeates it." The commentary is calling for transformative change to eliminate racism and to "stop extinguishing careers of exceptional scientists and instead demonstrate that we truly value innovation and creativity."
