Novel Scaffold/Cell Constructs for Treatment of Eye Disease

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness, and there are few treatment options for the atrophic, dry form.   As the disease progresses, retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) in the macula lose function or die, and as a result, photoreceptors are lost. One promising option is to develop a cellular therapy using RPE derived from pluripotent stem cells. Both hESC-RPE and iPS-RPE have been shown to be similar (although not identical) to fetal RPE.  We describe efforts to develop monolayers of hESC-RPE or iPS-RPE on implantable scaffolds.
