Lessons from Deepwater Horizon – When Science Meets the Media
In the spring of 2010, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill captured the nation's collective interest. As an academic working at the interface of marine microbiology and hydrocarbon geochemistry I was among a handful of individuals who was prepared to investigate the impacts to the deep ocean in real-time. In this presentation I will discuss my experience with the Deepwater Horizon event that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Topics will include a background description of the setting and the event; scientific discoveries pertaining to the fate of oil, gas and dispersant in the deep ocean; and the interactions of scientists and the media.
